1. What is the Check test?
When you qualified as an ADI, your name was entered onto the Register Of Approved Driving Instructors (Car). A condition of registration is that every so often, you agree to undertake a check test, sometimes called ‘the test of continued fitness and ability to give instruction’.

2. How is the test arranged?
The adjudicating SE(ADI) for your area will write to you and ask that you attend for a check test on the date and time stated on the form. You must sign and date the form, and return it to the SE(ADI).

3. My pass rate is good, so I don’t want be checked. Can I refuse?
No, remember it is a condition of continued registration that you periodically attend for check test. Failure to do so could mean that your licence will be revoked and your name removed from the register.

4. I can’t attend on the date or time specified, what should I do?
No problem, just ring the SE(ADI) on the contact number given, and they will be happy to re-arrange at a mutually agreed time. They should then send another form out with the new time and date.

5. What happens on the test?
The SE(ADI) will just sit in the back of your car, while you deliver a normal driving lesson to one of your pupils. At the end, out of earshot of the pupil, they will grade you accordingly.

6. I can’t find a pupil, what should I do?
Again, don’t worry. You may be able to borrow one from another ADI, or the SE(ADI) can deliver a role-play lesson as they did in your part three test when you qualified. The difference here would be that in a role-play check test, the SE(ADI) would only portray one pupil for an hour (unlike the part three test, where there were two pupils and two separate phases - beginner / part-trained and trained / full licence holder). The pupil the SE(ADI) portrays will always be at the trained stage of learning to drive.

7. You mentioned grades - what are they?
1,2 & 3 - Unsatisfactory* and E,4,5 & 6 - Satisfactory*
*A fuller explanation will be given during training

8. I’m worried about the test, can you help?
Yes, that’s where I can help you. There is nothing to worry about on this test. My training will help you get through and will hopefully result in you getting a good grade. Remember that when you qualified, you showed yourself to be of the required standard, so provided that your still up to the required standard, you’ve nothing to worry about.

9. I want to improve my grade, can you help?
Yes no problem.

10. How is your training conducted?
I will do two hours training with you on a one-to-one basis. At this point you can decide if you want to do a role-play check test or take a real pupil. Whatever you choose to do, I’ll help you brush up on any areas that need it, and I’ll tell you what the SE(ADI) is looking for. If you decide to take a real pupil, I’ll then sit in the back on a normal lesson and conduct a sort of mock test. I’ll take no part in this mock test, as I wouldn’t want you to feel undermined in front of your pupil. If you are going to do the real test as a role-play with the SE(ADI), then I’ll do a mock role-play test with you.

11. I am fleet registered, do I have to take a check test?
Yes - you must contact the SE(ADI) to inform him that you are fleet registered - DO NOT wait until the day of the test. You should bring a fleet customer along for this test, if not the SE will conduct a fleet check test in the same way that the Part Three coaching ability test was carried out. Inform the SE of your intentions when you contact him to tell him about the fact you are fleet registered. Again, DO NOT leave it until the day of the test.

12. Do I have to do the ordinary check test as well as the fleet?
No - the fleet check test is sufficient to cover both the learner check test grading and the fleet. Your fleet grade will also be your normal ADI grade.

13. Do you do any training for the fleet check test?
Yes, I am also fleet registered myself. This training would be in the form of a two hour assessment on driver development training to an experienced and inexperienced company car driver.

14. I am very interested, what are the prices?
I charge £35 per hour for check test training, the same as I do for ADI Instructional Ability Test training.
